The XR1200 series is a one make race in the American AMA series featuring Harley Davidsons.

Harley Davidson XR1200 Race Series

The AMA Pro Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series, a one make, five race championship featuring mildly modified Harley-Davidson XR1200s.

Vance & Hines provides the official race kit for the class. The kit consists of a Vance & Hines XR1200 exhaust system, a Fuelpak fuel management system, race bodywork including number plate, single seat tail section and belly pan, 17-inch front wheel with matching front fender, steering damper, oil cooler relocator and race decal package. The complete kit costs around $3500 USD.

Like all the other AMA Pro Road Racing series Dunlop provides the spec tyres. Sunoco provides the 260 GTX fuel. In addition to the Vance & Hines supplied kit parts, teams are allowed to upgrade the suspension, hand and foot controls, brake components and instrumentation.

For the 2010 season, the AMA Pro Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series will race at five rounds of the AMA Pro Road Racing Championship. The first races were held just north of Harley-Davidson’s Milwaukee headquarters at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI. The most recent event was the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The series moves on to Virginia International Raceway and New Jersey Motorsports Park, with the season finale at Barber Motorsports Park.

The series features a Vance and Hines payout of $5000 split amongst the top 5 placegetters, and a Harley Davidson contingency plan that adds another $5000 per round paid back to 10th place.

Daytona Racing/RMR rider Danny Eslick took a thrilling victory over teammate Jake Holden in the debut of the AMA Pro Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series at Road America on June 6. Eslick, the reigning AMA Daytona Sportbike champion and current points leader, dominated the time sheets all weekend, but had his hands full during the back-and-forth 10-lap race, pipping Holden at the line to take a narrow 0.055-second margin of victory with a last lap drafting pass at the finish line.

Eslick then took his second consecutive victory in the series at Mid-Ohio on July 18, emerging victorious from a three-way battle between himself, teammate Jake Holden, and HOG Racing’s Shawn Higbee.

The Vance & Hines XR1200 series returns for the third of five rounds at Virginia International Raceway August 14-15, 2010.

Footnote: Both the USA and Australia have had similar classes in the past, utilising Harley Sportsters. The 90’s AMA “Super Twins” series was the entry class for both Ben and Eric Bostrom, the latter winning a championship in the class.
