Western Australia’s drag race season got underway with some sizzling street bike performances
Western Australia’s drag race season got underway with some sizzling street bike performances. Perths first 8 second street bike pass, and the first showing of a D/SB class bike were among the highlights. Three different makes of 1000cc sportsbikes pushed the B/SB performance levels, with Neil Anderson’s 9.23 the class’s best ever.

Comp Bike
Neil Anderson took out the Grand Opening event of the Perth Motorplex season on November 3, defeating Tim McClure in an all B/SB final. It was a B/SB dominated field in fact with qualifying led by a trio of different combinations. Anderson’s Kawasaki ZX10R led with a 9.23, way under the 9.41 national record, while Reg McCallum’s Yamaha R1 ran a 9.34 and McClure’s Suzuki GSXR1000 ran a 9.41. Ross Smith’s Suzuki Hayabusa ran WA’s first street bike eight with an 8.99 on his A/SB. The final was a close contest but a holeshot helped Anderson to a 9.53 to 9.59 win.
Modified Bike
National champion Adam Ewing proved he will be a difficult man to beat this season in Modified Bike by winning the opening event over Tony Wood. A red light from Wood’s stretched Hayabusa ended any chances he had of defeating Ewing whose 8.4 second GSXR bodied Suzuki is the quickest bike in the field. Wood was doing double duties, also riding a Kawasaki ZX10R in Competition Bike.

The nitro Harleys of Kim Stevens and Mark Drew were doing testing ahead of the national championship round on November 30 and December 1. Stevens put in a series of six second runs while Drew battled to keep his ride on the straight and narrow, still managing some low sevens. The next race event is on November 16/17, featuring the first championship round of Pro Stock Motorcycle ever at Perth Motorplex.
