Jay Marmont’s decision to move to Yamaha in 2008 is already paying off with the CDR/Rockstar/Yamaha rider recording his first 2008 victory for the manufacturer at the Gosford installment of the 2008 Motocross Masters Series last weekend.

Marmont was joined by fellow Yamaha recruit Danny Ham in the Pro Open class with the pair using the event as an opportunity to test their brand new machinery in a race environment. After taking delivery of his YZ450F just weeks ago, Marmont proved that he has quickly adapted to the new bike and with continued testing will be a true contender in 2008 Australian Motocross and Supercross Championships.

“Being my first race on a YZ450F and my first event since last year I didn’t really know what to expect especially when it came to starts,” Marmont said. “Overall my starts were pretty good and we managed to come out on top which was the best thing to come from the weekend.”

Marmont obtained the holeshot in his first race of the weekend and after knocking bars with Craig Anderson recorded fourth in the first race. A win in the second and third in the final was enough for the Wollongong based rider to secure overall honours. The event also marked the return of seasoned competitor Danny Ham to the Yamaha rider squad, who will compete with Team Seven throughout the 2008 season. On the track which he designed and built, Ham displayed great potential and believes the team now has a clear indication of where they are positioned going into the first round of the 2008 Australian Motocross Championship in April.

“The weekend was my first race back since March 2007 and it was more of a practice race to see what we need to do before the start of the motocross season,” Ham said. “It was great to get back into the swing of things while also seeing where everybody else is at after the break. Overall we are getting there and with the information obtained from the weekend, we still have the time to make a few changes before it really starts to count.”

Marmont will be back on track this weekend when he travels north for the first round of the Sunshine State Series at Hervey Bay on Queensland’s Fraser Coast.
