2009 Westernationals Preview

The 2009 Westernationals at Perth’s Motorplex will be held for the 38th time on February 28th and March 1st 2009. Included in the over 300 entries are over 75 motorcycle drag racers. Once again the event will take on a hint of interstate rivalry with around 10 racers making the long haul West from Queensland.

The loudest and fastest motorcycles on the globe will contest Top Bike, with 11 entrants on nitromethane burners capable of speeds of over 200 mph and 6 six second quarter mile times. Perth’s Jay Upton is hoping a new engine and chassis combination will deliver the goods at his home track.

Competition bike has 21 entries, with 12 of those in the Street Bike sub-classes. All eyes will be on the front running B/SB 1000cc machines, with a number of those capable of running at a record setting pace. Current Australian champion and class record holder, Queenslander Dave Rundmann, will again return as he defends his number one plate in the class.

With the meeting run under the Championship indexes, Perth racer Neil Anderson will be hard to bet against, but could come under pressure from Gold Coast’s Blair Pennington who recently-  unofficially –  claimed the “fastest 1000cc”  title from Anderson by mere thousandths of a second, and several other Perth based Comp class machines.

With 44 entrants for Modified Bike, the winner will have put in a hard days work to claim that trophy. A number of Queensland racers will be attempting to steal that title away from the Sandgropers, but current dual Australian champion Adam Ewing will no doubt be planning to stop that happening, along with his 40 odd fellow Perth racers.

The 38th Westernationals features rounds of the Australian Top Doorslammer and Australian Top Bike Championship series and is a round of the Rocket Allstars Racing Series. Qualifying will be held on Saturday 28 February and eliminations will be on Sunday 1 March 2009.
