Donington World Superbike 2011

Yamaha’s Marco Melandri has taken only 3 races to get his first World Superbike win after stepping out of MotoGP.

Ducati rider Jakob Smrz broke away early, but was hunted down and passed by Melandri with a lap to go. Carlos Checa was third after a late pass on BMW’s Leon Haslam. Injured Chris Vermeulen took part in practice, but soreness from his knee forced his withdrawal for the weekend.

Superbike Race Two Results

Carlos Checa changed to a softer rear tyre for Race 2, and despite slowing slightly in the last few laps, he held out Marco Melandri for the win. Melandri looked set to repeat his Race 1 victory when he shook off a determined Leon Camier and hunted Checa down as he had done to Smrz in Race One.

It wasn’t to be, Checa taking his 3rd win of the series, cementing himself in the championship lead. Current champ Biaggi had a shocker, a jump start and a subsequent failure to complete a ride through penalty saw the Aprilia rider black flagged out of the race. Troy Corser finished the day with a 9th and a 13th.

Melandri’s win and second placing saw him move to 2nd place in the championship.

Supersport

The Parkingo team have again shown the late switch of manufacturer to Yamaha has been a success with a 1-2 finish at Donington. Chaz Davies did get close to Scassa late in the race, but only made one unsuccessful attempt at getting by, following his team mate to the line. Another local finished 3rd, with Gino Rea putting his Honda on the final box spot. Broc Parkes was 5th.
