The 2009 round of the World Superbike Championship netted Ben Spies only a few points catchup on championship rival Nori Haga, after a dramatic finish in Race One saw Spies snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Literally on the last corner of the last lap, Spies newly Sterilgarda sponsored Yamaha ran out of fuel, missing out on what almost certainly would have been a win after a dramatic and enthralling battle with the two Xerox Ducatis of Haga, and first time race winner Michel Fabrizio.

The race had been delayed for nearly an hour after a dramatic first corner crash on lap 1 involving Tamada, Hill, Corser, Neukirchner and Roberts led to it being red flagged. Neukirchner came off  worst with a broken right leg and dislocated right foot.Troy Corser joined the restart on another machine, but this one too was consigned to the scrap metal bin on the first lap, after a mistake entering the parabolica saw the BMW cartwheel thru the gravel.

The drama didnt stop after Fabrizio powered past the slowing Ben Spies for his maiden win, with third place getter Max Biaggi disqualified immediately after the race, for apparently cutting a chicane. This promoted Ten Kate Honda rider Ryuichi Kiyonari to the final spot on the podium. Haga added 20 more points to his advantage over Spies with his second place. Ruben Xaus made it to a notable seventh place on the new BMW superbike.

Race two had more surprises, with Haga in the lead, but hitting a bird which injured his arm, causing him to lose feeling in the arm and then crash out heavily, leaving him with no points for this race. Spies was in race mode from lap one, and put his head down a few laps in and drove away from the field. Fabrizio hung on to a second place, over Ryuichi Kiyonari.

Spies leaves Monza 6 points closer to Haga, the gap down to 54 points.

World Supersport saw Cal Crutchlow grab his second win of the season, over a returned to health Fabian Foret, and Eugene Laverty.
