An electric sports bike capable of 240km/h nears production.

Torque. In a flat wide power band. That’s what makes a motorcycle accelerate. Imagine having maximum torque from zero revs.

And that’s what San Fransisco based Mission Motors are promising in their upcoming “Mission One” electric sports bike. Along with a 240 km range, they predict a 240km/h top speed. The Mission One boasts over 100ft/lbs of torque from 0 to over 6000 rpm, with a gearless drive that will rev all the way to 15,000 rpm.

All in near silence and with barely a vibration. So says the press release anyway, after Mission displayed the prototype machine at the 2009 TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) show in California last month.

Features promised include adjustable throttle maps, adjustable regenerative breaking and a data acquisition system wirelessly linked to your computer. Mission One is the brainchild of CEO Forrest North, who along with lead designer Yves Béhar are hoping the Mission One will redefine the way electric motorcycles are viewed.

Having driven GM’s electric car years ago at a press launch, and experiencing its massive tyre-smoking torque from a standstill, I can vouch for the fact that potentially (no pun intended) this would be one exciting machine to ride. A pre production mock-up, using a Ducati stripped of it’s desmo twin, apparently produced rave reviews from those who rode it.

The company has formed a race division, Mission Motorsports, and will compete in the TTXGP on June 12 2009. The TTXGP is the first zero-emissions motorcycle race on the Isle of Mann.

Mission Motors will be will offering fifty Limited Edition models of the Mission One scheduled for delivery in the USA in 2010 with a price around the $68,000 US dollar mark. The standard and hopefully lower priced model of the Mission One will be announced in mid 2009.

It is not known at this stage what plans, if any, the company has of exporting the bike.
