Yamaha have released details of the upcoming, and long awaited release of the new 2009 V-Max, replacing the original VMax first released in 1985. While the 1985 model was a 1200cc producing 140hp, the 2009 hot rod is now out to nearly 1700cc and 200 horsepower.

The V-Max features an array of new tech, from  fly by wire EFI, to six piston radial caliper ABS brakes. Designed to be the ultimate factory "Hot Rod" Yamaha have crammed the motor with horsepower goodness, the 1679cc  V4 sports four valves per cylinder, DOHC, an oversquare 90×66 bore and stroke, and a healthy 11.3 compression ratio.

Variable length computer controlled intake stacks sit atop the 65 degree V, liquid cooled powerhouse.

While Yamaha have attempted to keep the weight off with an aluminium frame, and "lightweight" bodywork, the V-Max still tips the scales at a hefty 310kg. The bikes massive 1700mm wheelbase – nearly 67 inches for the drag racers- and reported low centre of gravity will make it a contender on the drag strip, but the shaft drive means gearing changes will not be possible, and 18" wheels will limit tyre choice. Standard rear tyre is a 200 series, so traction should be plentiful.

Other points of note: Fuel tank is underseat, with a smallish 15 litre capacity, Gearbox is a 5 speed, and top speed is limited to a low 220kmh.

No word on if or when the bike will released in Australia, Yamaha USA is quoting an RRP of USD 17,900, with an expected delivery date of November 2008.

UPDATE: Word from Yamaha Australia is the VMax will be available by special order only through your Yamaha Dealer. Orders will be taken from July 1st, with a November 08 delivery. RRP for Australia not set yet.
