Maxwell Makes Moto2

wayne-maxwellVictorian Superbike rider Wayne Maxwell has scored a ride in the Moto2 class with the Italian Matteoni Racing Team at this year’s 2010 Phillip Island MotoGP. 27 year old Maxwell said he is very much looking forward to competing in the international event to showcase what he is capable of on the purpose built machine.

“I’m on a Honda on my home circuit and on my preferred tyres so I couldn’t ask for a better package,” Maxwell commented. “I need to thank all those who put this deal together including Honda Australia. It’s a great opportunity and I have a lot of faith in the Matteoni Team.”

Maxwell is the current Australian Superbike pole and race lap record holder. His time of 1:32.316 on board a Honda CBR1000RR at the Phillip Island MotoGP support races last year was faster many of the MotoGP riders in the field. For comparison, Casey Stoners pole setting lap was a 1:30.34, a mere 2 seconds faster than the production bike based superbike ride of Maxwell.

“We are really thrilled that this deal has come together for Wayne,” said Tony Hinton, General Manager, Honda Motorcycles. “He has represented Honda extremely well in both the Australian Superbike Championships as well as overseas in the Suzuka 8 Hour. Honda Australia has continued to support Wayne over the years with the intention that he might follow in the footsteps of other world-class riders who started with us.”

The Phillip Island MotoGP will take place October 15 -17, 2010.
